Sumayya Usmani: Inspiring Desi of the Day

Sumayya Usmani is a Pakistani-born author, memoirist, food writer and writing mentor based in Scotland. She practiced law for 12 years before developing a career as a food writer, with a blog called My Tamarind Kitchen. Her first published book, Summers Under the Tamarind Tree: Recipes & Memories From Pakistan was listed by The Independent in its “11 best new cookbooks 2016”, described as “spellbinding” and “an unprecedentedly authentic snapshot into the culinary culture of this often overlooked country”. Her next book Mountain Berries and Desert Spice: Sweet Inspiration From the Hunza Valley to the Arabian Sea was published in 2017. Her third book is a food memoir called Andaza for which she won the Scottish Book Trust‘s Next Chapter Award 2021.

Anjula Devi: Inspiring Desi of the Day

A respected food writer and author, Anjula started cooking with her father at the age of eight. At that time the ingredients for Indian cuisine were not as readily available as they are now and Anjula travelled on the number 207 bus with her father to Shepherd’s Bush Market where they would buy a selection of spices, fresh fish and Indian vegetables. Utilising her cookery skills and passion for spices, Anjula launched her own business in 2010, Anjula Devi Authentic Indian Food, providing Indian dinner parties and Indian cookery classes. Anjula has created a range of authentic recipes for Manchester United, arguably the biggest football club in the world, where she is a consultant chef. A Brand Ambassador for TRS Foods, the world’s largest Indian food company, Anjula has also launched her own brand, Route 207, inspired by the bus route she used to take to the spice market. 

Chef Monisha Bharadwaj: Inspiring Desi of the Day

Chef Monisha Bharadwaj is an award winning author, food historian and a food writer based in London, UK. Monisha is a qualified chef from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai. She started Cooking With Monisha, situated in West London, in 2004. Today it is a successful school that attracts not only the home cook but also professional chefs who wish to learn Chef Monisha’s brand of simple authentic Indian cooking. Monisha has also created and taught her popular courses at the Ashburton Cookery School in Devon, The Bertinet Kitchen in Bath, Seasoned Cookery School, south Derbyshire, the Cambridge Cookery School and at Divertimenti in Knightsbridge. She is regularly invited to judge food events and has been a judge at the Guild of Fine Food’s ‘Great Taste Awards’ for the past several years.

Anoothi Vishal is the author of Mrs LC’s Table. She is also a columnist and food writer, specialising in cuisine history, culinary links between communities and regions, and the business of restaurants. She writes for the Economic Times, NDTV Food, Business World and other leisure and business publications. Her blog amoveablefeast.in is widely read by the fooderati in the country, and appreciated for its candid views and insightful, detailed writing. Anoothi is among the few food-writers in the country who has also been on the other side of a restaurant kitchen. A cookbook addict, Ruchira has been cooking since she was nine-years-old and has been throwing dinner parties since she was 14. She’s always dreamed of opening her own cafe and in 2011, she went on to be a participant in Masterchef India 2, where she made it to the top 12. Since then, she hasn’t looked back and has appeared on several TV shows including Olive it Up and Guilt Free. She also has a number of Youtube videos in association with Indian Food Network on easy cooking.
